Miranda Loughry

MA MSc Archaeology and Anthropology, St. Peter's College, Oxford.

I'm particularly interested in the anthropology of language, the senses, and personhood. I'm eager to pursue a career in museum learning and public engagement, with a special focus on designing interactive, multisensory, and fully accessible exhibits.

My pet project for the past few years has been reading and writing about changing conceptions of nonhuman personhood in the Information Age. If anthropology has taught us anything, it's that humans have historically not been very good at first contact situations. That's why it's critical to develop standards for the ethical treatment of animals, cyborgs, dataswarms--and yes, aliens--now, before we actually encounter fully sentient nonhumans. If not, we risk getting ourselves into the kind of dystopian first contact scenario that sci-fi writers have been warning us about since H. P. Lovecraft's War of the Worlds.

Also,I'm blind! I do a number of disability advocacy things at university, and I write a blog about navigating life in the sighted world. If you're interested in supporting research into retinal diseases like mine, my VisionWalk team is a great place to do so. Thanks a million!
